This describes what information openmik collects and how it's used, on the website and in the openmik Android app.

Information we collect

  • Account info - your email address, and profile details you choose to add (name, bio, profile picture, gender, age, location).
  • Content you submit - performance video links, audio recordings, and the settings you choose for them (visibility, tonic, etc).
  • Train recordings - for Tonal Quality, a recording of the note you sing (see Microphone below).
  • Activity - actions you take in the app (votes cast, challenges viewed, Train drills played) so features like matchmaking, leaderboards, and your own history work.
  • If you sign in with Google or Facebook - the basic profile info (name, email) those providers share with us.

Microphone

The singing drills in Train (Breath Control, Note Snipe, Tonal Quality) use your device's microphone only while a drill is running, and never while the app is in the background.

  • Breath Control and Note Snipe - the audio is analysed on your device and immediately discarded; it is never recorded, stored or uploaded. Only the resulting pitch readings and your score are sent to openmik, to score the run and show leaderboards.
  • Tonal Quality - the note you sing (a few seconds) is recorded and uploaded along with the tone measurements taken on your device, so you can play it back on your result. We keep only your most recent Tonal Quality recording - each new run replaces and deletes the previous one - and it is only shown to you, never to other users.

Pitch Perfect only plays sounds and doesn't use the microphone. Separately, a performance recording is only uploaded when you choose to submit one.

How we use it

To run the app: match you into voting comparisons, show leaderboards and profiles, keep your recordings tied to your account, and improve the product based on how it's used. We don't sell your personal information.

Third parties we use

  • Cloudinary - hosts uploaded audio/video (including Tonal Quality recordings) and profile pictures.
  • Google / Facebook - if you choose to sign in with them.
  • Email delivery (Resend or Gmail, depending on configuration) - for verification codes and account emails.
  • OpenStreetMap / Nominatim - powers the optional city search when you set a location on your profile.

Each of these has its own privacy practices for the data that passes through them.

Visibility of your content

What other users can see depends on the choices you make - challenge recordings have their own visibility/rating/profile settings, and your profile itself can be made public or private. See the relevant screens in the app for the current options.

Data retention

We keep your account and content for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account and its data at any time - in the app (Profile → Delete account) or on the web at openmik.com/accounts/delete/. This removes your profile, photo, recordings (including Train recordings), votes and Train scores. For anything else you'd like removed, contact us.

Children

openmik isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. Continuing to use openmik after a change means you accept the update.
